Leggett & Platt Continues Focus On Healthier and More Restful Sleep

With New Innovative Softech Innerspring

Low-profile pocketed mattress topper-coil offers alternative to foams and deep upholstery layers to minimize disturbance and provide comfort.

Edited by: Dale T. Read, Editor-in-Chief

Leggett & Platt is leading the charge in improving healthy sleep and sleep product performance with the continued advance of the company’s innovative innerspring coil technology. For decades with the exception of the Marshall or pocketed coil and European continuous coil construction, most innerspring units were either traditional simple knotted Bonnell hour-glass steel coils or an unknotted offset LFK style coil. Consumers and the retailers who sell mattresses were offered basically the same innersprings or coil type mattresses regardless of the brand. While coil count or tensile strength, or even steel gauge and density of the coils varied, the basic designs and engineering remained the same for many years. However in the past two years Leggett & Platt has re-engineered the concept and construction of innersprings to address the issues of comfort, response, conformance and support. They have given another whole life to the idea of innerspring-based mattresses.

Leggett & Platt recently introduced the latest in the company’s line of innovative innerspring products: the new Softech coil sleep system. At 2.5 inches in height, the Softech coil is a resilient, plush innerspring designed to bring comfort and performance to the top layer of mattresses.

The product’s tough, low profile comfortably cushions a sleeping body, provide individualized coil support and offers a durability that prevents body impressions that often form with traditional foam or fiber toppers.

Engineers at Leggett & Platt’s IDEA (Innovation, Design, Engineering, and Acceleration) Center designed the 2.5-inch Softech coil from a thin-gauge wire made from recycled steel. They discovered that the tiny, pocketed innersprings react like a pillow when constructed with at a high coil count ; they conform, support and respond to a sleeper’s body. In addition, the unique construction of the small, individually-pocketed Softech coils minimize disturbances by reducing motion transfer from partner to partner.

“Softech takes advantage of the comfort-inducing effects of coiled steel as a compressible, responsive element,” explained Tom Wells, Jr., director of engineering strategy and technical support for Leggett & Platt. “The coils have a smaller diameter and a lighter gauge than standard innerspring wires. Using approximately 5.5 turns per coil, we’re able to increase material efficiency in a vertical, flexible dimension.”

Durability and longevity in bed toppers is an increasingly important issue to mattress shoppers. Some foam and upholstery toppers compress or lose their comfort layer within a short span of time. By contrast, the average lifespan of a Softech topper provides years of comfort without body impressions.

Softech’s ergonomic efficacy is also less costly than the high-density cushioning of some visco-elastic or latex foam solutions. Because upholstery comfort layers are so tightly packed, they require substantially more raw materials to achieve the same result of an innerspring comfort layer.

This new 2.5˝inch Softech topper-layer coil comes on the heels of Leggett & Platt’s Superlastic PRO, one of the tallest coils used in modern bedding manufacturing. Standing at seven inches tall, PRO’s three-turn, alternating continuous coil system increased mattress profile height at a reduced cost to manufacturers and retailers.

“We see an emerging trend of customizing a sleep set’s vertical profile by using a variety of innerspring heights,” said Wells. “Mattress shoppers want it all; the plush look of a pillow top, the comforting feel of Active Support technology, and all at an affordable price. Softech offers each of these.”

Leggett & Platt is also providing point-of-sale materials for bedding manufacturers and retailers to use in their marketing efforts. The program comes complete with brochures, banners and posters, a short video and a retail sales associate (RSA) pocket reference card. L&P has also developed a small POP display to demonstrate Softech’s active support features.

“Leggett & Platt understands that the end consumer wants bedding that delivers a ‘Wow’ moment in the way of comfort,” said Mark Quinn, group executive vice president of marketing for Leggett & Platt’s bedding division. “We also realize that many of those same consumers don’t care for upholstered pillow tops. The goal of our bedding group is to offer manufacturers and retailers high-quality products and unique selling stories that can deliver healthier and more restful sleep to their customers.”

Anatomic Global Rejects Claims of Competitor’s Lawsuit

“This is just more bullying of the retailer,” says Farley

By now the mattress bedding industry knows that Tempur-Pedic has filed a lawsuit against as many as 15 mattress /bedding manufacturers - .including such major manufacturers as Sealy Simmons and Serta as well as suppliers and smaller boutique or specialty sleep companies. Anatomic Global is one of the companies being sued by Tempur-Pedic.

Anatomic Global CEO David Farley said a lawsuit filed against his company and the other competitors by Temper-Pedic was “totally baseless and without merit in law.” Farley went on to classify the lawsuit as nothing more than Temper-Pedic’s ongoing strategy of using intimidation against its retailers as a means to protect its market share.

“This is an unfortunate and pathetic attempt by the school yard bully, Temper-Pedic, to push its retailers into submission by implying they will be unable to get product from companies like ours in the future,” said Farley. “Instead of trying to win business by treating dealers with respect, allowing them to market their products and earn a decent margin, Tempurpedic is threatening to kill the supply chain that fosters competition and that keeps their company in check from total domination of the market.”

“I personally respect Tempur-Pedic for being leaders in the fully integrated, two-step direct-response marketing business and for being international brand builders par excellance’, but they insist on being ‘retailer minimizers’ as if, as my father would have said, they just don’t understand what side of their bread the butter is on,” he added.

Farley said Anatomic Global has a 28-year history of product design and manufacturing that the U.S. Patent Office has apparently not yet been deemed as relevant “prior art.” He added that as his company adds more and more national chains to its client roster, that the second-generation memory foam products such as those produced by Anatomic were indeed superior to that of the market leader, and much more in tune with the changing needs of consumers and the retailers “second-wave” opportunities.

“Tempur-Pedic can improve its market share by better product innovation and customer service, not through baseless legal action. Based on my conversations with retailers the lawsuit was announced with a clear negative implication on them also,” he added.

Founded in 1989, Anatomic Global, Inc. sets itself apart by raising the bar on the manufacture and supply of “proudly made in the USA” environmentally-friendly mattresses and bedding. The company upholds a 360-degree green manufacturing commitment in three ways – by developing applications for its innovative and sustainable plant-based formulas; by leading the industry with its zero-air emissions manufacturing process; and by applying the most efficient direct-to-store and consumer-direct delivery methods for a reduced carbon footprint.

In 2008, the company launched the Ecomfort Mattress brand of mattresses featuring its signature, patented EcoMemoryFoam™ extreme open-cell plant-based memory foam.

New Ergomotion ‘Affordable High-Value’ Adjustable Bed in Production

A streamlined new bed, the Ergomotion Series 100, chops the price of adjustable “active lifestyle” bed-bases while providing the highest-value for shoppers seeking the best bargain in the adjustable industry.

The bed is wall saving, meaning beds can be adjusted in place while keeping it next to the night stand. Two Ergomotion beds can be connected yet operate independently. The beds, in queen size, will retail from $899 to $999.

The new unit is designed to look like an ordinary white bed box spring. A hand controller allows personalized settings for maximum comfort. The controller is hard-wired to a quiet but heavy-duty DC motor. The advanced engineering in each new bed requires no tools for set-up. The foundation operates with or without the optional legs--it may be used in a bed frame or on the floor.

The new Ergomotion Series 100 adjustable base is designed for use with traditional headboards, footboards and existing bed frames. This bed enables owners to watch TV, read, use laptops and play video games from an inclined position on a wide variety of existing mattresses. It may also provide health benefits for people with poor blood circulation, neck and shoulder pain, gastric reflux, arthritis, asthma, snoring and breathing problems. Owners report improved spinal alignment and deeper night’s sleep. The Series 100 bed carries a 20 year limited warranty.

New mattress sales account for nearly all adjustable base units sold nationally, although the bases may be used with many but not all existing mattresses.

Ergomotion adjustable beds fit in any frame and elevate to a sitting position. Seven sizes are available. All are wall saving and feature removable legs. Snap-in replacement parts require no tools. Consumers “Flipping Out” Over News 2-Sided Mattress Program

2-Sided Mattresses Now Account For 27% of Sales at 1800mattress.com

Consumers pinched by the sluggish economy and seeking greater value in bedding purchases, have driven a dramatic surge in sales of two-sided mattresses for bedding retailer 1800mattress.com, which announced today that the increased value product now accounted for 27-percent of its unit sales in the first five months of 2009.

“Consumers are telling us that they are attracted to our $399 to $899 two-sided mattress program for its increased value. They understand the double-value proposition and believe they will get better performance from the mattress, even with the minor inconvenience of flipping the bed every six months,” said SVP of Merchandising and Retail Sales John O’Connell.

Virtually all mattresses were two-sided until the early 1990s when specialty sleep products and some inner-spring manufacturers began to introduce the one-sided concept. The driver for the change was the convenience factor of consumers not having to flip the mattress, but also because not having to build comfort layers on both sides of the unit reduced costs and added to manufacturer’s margins.

The current 1800mattress.com two-sided program was designed by the retailer, in conjunction with one of its longstanding vendors; Rex Bedding of Plainfield, N.J. Rex is an independent manufacturer well-known in the industry for its high-quality value bedding production.

The two-sided mattress line starts at $399 and goes up to $899. Models are available in firm, plush and pillow top. All the mattresses start with inner-spring units and are then enhanced with foam and other comfort layer ingredients. They are wrapped in quality cotton ticking.

Founded in 1976, 1800mattress.com is the leading national multi-channel (internet, chat, call center and showrooms) retailer of mattresses, box springs and bedding products. It features products by all major brands, including custom sizes, sofa beds, Murphy beds, futons, and adjustable and organic beds. Its award winning customer service is well chronicled in thousands of media articles and books. The company was also the first mattress retailer to introduce a two-hour delivery window, and fast national and international delivery of its products. Its business-to-business sales division supplies schools, hospitals, hotels and other institutions.

Joe Alexander of www.Keetsa.com To Speak at

Internet Retailers’ Conference in Boston Mid-June

Fastest Growing Tradeshow and Exhibit in US

By: Dale T. Read, Editor-in-Chief, BEDROOM Magazine

Joe Alexander of California-based Keetsa Mattress and the web guru of www.keetsa.com has been invited to speak at the 2009 Internet Retailers Conference (IRCE) in mid-June in Boston, MA. Keetsa is increasingly being recognized for it's innovative approach to the mattress industry. As a member of the Specialty Sleep Association, we are excited to bring Specialty Sleep products to an entirely new marketplace. Brick and Mortar stores are starting to realize that their website and web presence can drive sales, set them apart from their local competition and expand their market reach. Considering IRCE has been named the fastest growing trade show/exhibition in the country, Alexander tells BEDROOM Magazine that this is a considerable honor and a recognition of Keetsa’s growing success in the online and brick and mortar sales of specialty sleep mattresses.

Alexander points out that there are more than 13,000 trade shows held in the U.S. each year, it is a huge achievement for the show that's selected the fastest growing show in all the land by the leading publication in the conference business. That is exactly the honor bestowed on the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, which several months ago was named America's fastest growing conference by Tradeshow Week at its annual "Fastest Fifty" banquet celebrating the fastest growing trade shows and conferences. In his invitation to the fifth annual IRCE 2009 to be held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on June 15-19, 2009, Internet Retailer Publisher Jack Love explains how IRCE became America's fastest growing show and how this year's conference strives to outshine all those that went before.

Alexander is a proud advocate of internet retail marketing, especially as it relates to achieving a successful strategy for brick and mortar stores sales of sleep products.

Foamex Introduces BodyZone, a New Defense For Hospitals and Nursing Homes

New Product Line to introduced at SAWC/WHS Meeting in Dallas

Edited By: Dale T. Read, Editor-in-Chief

While normally BEDROOM Magazine does not report on non-retail or non-commercial product innovations and developments, when a new mattress/bedding solution that could be eventually used in the commercial area, then we think retailers should know what could be coming in the future.

In April 2009, Foamex, a leading producer of polyurethane foam-based solutions and specialty comfort products, introduced its new BodyZone™ and BodyZone™ Ultra to the healthcare bedding sector as new solutions to pressure ulcer prevention, treatment and to achieve an optimum level in patient care.

With its signature approach of using the most advanced technology and engineering in the industry, Foamex has developed these series of new products to reduce the clinical occurrence of pressure ulcers that can result from long-term bed care.

In independent testing, the BodyZone support surfaces demonstrated superior performance over other brands by neutralizing pressure, heat, moisture, friction and shear – the factors that lead to dermal and tissue breakdown.

“The healthcare market is a key pillar of our growth strategy at Foamex, and we are committed to bringing innovative solutions to this segment that can enhance patient care and maximize facility operations,” said Jack Johnson, Foamex President and CEO.

The Problem With Pressure

“The magnitude of the pressure ulcer occurrence coupled with the recent changes in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS) reimbursement rules has increased the need for a more effective, creative and comfortable solution”, said Mario Neto, Foamex Director of Business Development.

In order to prevent pressure ulcers before they start, Foamex engineers worked with innovative designs and the Company’s latest generation of highly breathable memory foams to enhance the performance of its support surfaces portfolio.

Independent testing of these advancements illustrated that BodyZone’s technology delivers the lowest average and maximum pressure readings and the highest body envelopment scores for better comfort and care.

These new support surface solutions are manufactured utilizing Foamex’s patented VPFSM, or Variable Pressure Foaming, the most environmentally friendly manufacturing process available globally which has virtually zero emissions.

In addition, Foamex’s Surface Modification Technology (SMTSM) helps reduce friction and shear, offering additional protection to the skin.

Foamex has an excellent track record of developing new products for medical device applications including: dressing for vacuum assisted wound closure, applicators for preoperative skin preparation, blood oxygenators, products for breast cushioning during mammogram and instrument protection products to reduce the cost of replacing delicate and expensive surgical instruments.

Expert Input

Foamex introduced BodyZone at the 22nd Annual Symposium on Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society (SAWC/WHS) Meeting, which was held April 26-29, 2009, in Dallas.  The SAWC/WHS show is regarded industry-wide as the premier educational wound care-focused program.  Beyond the BodyZone exhibit at SAWC/WHS, Michel Hermans, M.D., also presented a white paper on the benefits and protection capabilities of the new Foamex advancements.  Dr. Hermans is a well-known key opinion leader in the wound care arena with expertise in general surgery, trauma care and burn care.

Classic Sleep Appoints Gannon V.P. of Sales

Former Retail Veteran Sets Sites on Opening New Retail

Relationships & Better Training for RSA’s

Classic Sleep Products has turned to a well-known retailer, Justin Gannon, to head its sales development organization. Gannon joins Classic as its vice president of sales, as part of the mattress manufacturer’s belief that a strong retailer will better understand the merchandise and training needs of their colleagues.

Gannon is widely known for his seven-year tenure at Mattress Discounters, rising from director of buying to vice president of merchandising and marketing. During that time, he was responsible for the remerchandising strategy that led to significant increases in average selling prices and margins. Also, return rates dropped to historic lows as a result of his efforts. In addition to developing strong relationships with industry vendors and suppliers, Gannon oversaw the marketing direction of the company. Prior to joining Mattress Discounters, Gannon was a corporate account manager with Sealy.

“As we went through the process of looking at who the next head of our sales division should be, we realized that retailers don’t need another sales person, but rather a real partner who understands their business and what they need to generate new sales and profits. There was no question that person was Justin, as he is widely credited with remerchandising and growing one of the best retail brands in the country,” said Classic Chief Executive Officer Michael Zippelli.

According to Gannon, the challenge for retailers today is how to generate traffic and close deals, something he believes Classic products can facilitate.

“If you look at what Classic has accomplished over the years, its has gone from a high-end brand to now more effectively offering price points across the full spectrum of retailer needs,” he said. “Moreover, the entrepreneurial and independent nature of the company gives it an unmatched ability to respond to dealer needs.”

Gannon said his priorities are to hire additional sales associates in parts of the country where Classic has some geographic opportunities, and fine tuning a new training program for retail sales associates to help them better sell specialty sleep products.

Gannon received his bachelor’s degree from James Madison University. He and his family reside in Manassas, VA.

Classic sells its bedding products under the Dormia brand, constructed with the finest components from around the world including all-natural and high-performance covers, lamb’s wool, visco-elastic memory foam, Talalay latex and a unique, multi-zone latex core.

The company offers enhanced features such as a quilted mattress tops and deluxe combination models that are comprised of memory and latex foam, as well as adjustable beds that allows each person to maximize their own sleep comfort. All premium bedding products are manufactured in the U.S. using hand-made craftsmanship and custom embroidery. The products are the highest-quality sleep products available in the market today.

Classic’s line of visco-elastic memory foam and latex mattresses, with various luxurious constructions, represents the fastest growing segment of the bedding market. The mattresses are designed to help customers get the maximum benefit out of each and every night’s sleep.

Consumers seeking to research mattress / bedding products offered by Comfort Solutions at www.comfortsolutions.com will now find that they can now view the company’s broad selection of mattress products as a series of individual brand experiences—each with its own image, positioning and product features—thanks to a newly completed, total revamp of the Top 10 mattress producer’s web site.

Comfort Solutions’ retailers also will be benefiting shortly from a password-enabled, online sales training section—as well as immediate access to a gallery of brand images and logos—now being readied for rollout this summer.

“We are very committed to helping retailers drive more business, whether it’s through a more effective online presentation of the Comfort Solutions brands they sell, or through the development of new site-based services that directly address what retailers need and how quickly they need it,” said Dave Roberts, company CEO and president.

“Our new site not only better defines and differentiates our brands for consumers,” Roberts added, “but also will be an invaluable tool for retail sales associates who need additional sales training, advertising graphics or product assistance.”

Comfort Solutions’ own reps will have the ability to order promotional materials for their retail customers online, streamlining collateral service and delivery to stores.

The new web presence incorporates Comfort Solutions’ expanding brand family, including the Perfect Contour, Natural Response, Laura Ashley, eXtended Life (XL), Reaction and King Koil collections, as if each brand had a distinct “mini-site” of its own.

Other new features include an international section that promotes the company’s major position as a global licensor and links visitors directly to each licensee’s site; an extensive, alphabetical Mattress Glossary that defines more than 60 terms a mattress shopper may encounter, plus a highly interactive mapping function for locating Comfort Solutions dealers.

According to Roberts, the site also was intended to define and reinforce the relationship between the Comfort Solutions and King Koil names. “The new site makes it clear that Comfort Solutions is our company name while King Koil is a quality mattress brand within our family of product brands,” he noted.

FabricTech2000 Taps Bergman as New President & COO

Industry Veteran Plans Major Geographic & Channel Expansion

For Leading Sleep Products Protection Company

FabricTech2000, the nation’s leader in bringing advanced technology and comfort to the sleep products protection industry, has named Jeff Bergman its new president and chief operating officer.

With nearly 30 years experience in the industry, Bergman is widely credited with driving major sales increases as executive vice president of sales and marketing for Spring Air’s former Phoenix licensee, and most recently as national vice president of sales and marketing at Aireloom Mattress Company.

“We are excited about the energy and expertise Jeff brings to our brand. He is by far the most successful sales and marketing executive in the mattress industry today, and has a tremendously successful track record taking strong brands and expanding their retail presence,” said FabricTech2000 Chairman and CEO Arnold Hershbain.

Bergman said he was drawn to the FabricTech2000 opportunity because of the quality of the product, advanced technology and the increasing importance accessories are playing in retail strategies.

“With declining traffic and sales, sleep shops and furniture stores are hungry for new sources of revenue and accessories, particularly quality protection products. These superior products can be an important new source of incremental sales for retailers,” said Bergman.

“When I studied the category, no one in my opinion was offering the quality, value and rigorous testing that FabricTech2000 offers to the marketplace and I wanted to be a part of this company’s growth,” he added.

Bergman said his initial plans will be to complete the recruitment of a national sales force that was begun by management last year, and to open new accounts, particularly in the Southeast, Midwest and Western United States.

FabricTech2000 sells through more than 700 retail locations throughout the United States in chains such as Sleepy’s, RC Willey, Value City Furniture, Ashley Home Stores and Mattress4You. Currently there are over 3 million Bed Barriers in use throughout the United States.

Dealers typically position FabricTech2000 products as a premium solution for mattress and pillow protection in their stores. Because the company provides exceptional training and support to the dealers and their retail sales associates, there is usually an attractive spike in accessory sales after our products reach the floor.

Hershbain said that new technologies offered in their products make the FabricTech lineup a favorite for consumers purchasing higher-end bedding and, in particular, visco latex products. Plus, FabricTech is endorsed, recommended and used by more than 12,000 physicians in the United States.

“The unique construction of our products provides the ultimate in protection, without altering the feel of the mattress in any way. This is particularly important in visco and latex products. The consumer is making the purchase based on a particular feel when they demo a mattress in the store. In many cases, with other mattress pads, they would be dissatisfied with the mattress when they get it home because most pads interfere with the temperature sensing properties of the foam and alter the mattress’s overall comfort,” said Hershbain.

All FabricTech2000 products prevent skin particles and moisture from reaching a mattress, using a three-step approach. OmniGuard® Ultra’s breathable PolyKnit™ outer layer absorbs perspiration, moisture and stains, while the waterproof InnerShield™ membrane protects them from reaching the mattress. It wicks moisture away instead of creating an uncomfortable “puddle” effect. This also prevents mold and mildew from forming. OmniGuard® Ultra is naturally dust mite, bed bug, stain and water resistant, and is made with no added chemicals, so it is safe for children and pets. The products are waterproof, quiet and cool, unlike noisy, sticky vinyl.

The InnerShield™ membrane also safeguards a mattress manufacturer’s warranty since it can be voided if there is a stain on a mattress –regardless if your claim is for another reason.

Founded in 1992, FabricTech2000 provides consumers with a safer and healthier sleeping environment by utilizing the most advanced technology, the finest materials and highest quality workmanship. In addition, all FabricTech2000 products are proudly made in the United States and adhere to strict medical guidelines. FabricTech2000 is the exclusive provider of mattress protection products for The Style Network.

Vinyl Products Offers Decades of Supplier Expertise for Waterbed, Air Bed and Other Manufacturers Needing Vinyl Barrier and Containment Technology

Vinyl Products Mfg. Inc. has been in business since 1970 providing 100% made in USA components for both waterbed and air bed manufacturers.

Vinyl Products holds some of the original patents for waterbeds. These include using fiber as a wave inhibitor, and “T” corner construction.

In the heyday of waterbeds Vinyl Products supplied water components to many of the smaller to mid size conventional mattress manufacturers that offered softside waterbeds, and we have been providing components for softside waterbeds to companies in Europe since 1985.

Because Vinyl Products manufactures in-house we can offer any size and fiber wave inhibitor configuration that is required. Lead times for up to 100 units is 6 working days, maximum lead time is 2 weeks. We make everything to the client’s exact measurements because an exact fit leads to a lower return rate and a happier consumer. Our warranty covers both materials and workmanship, not just the workmanship. Vinyl Products prides itself on a return rate for waterbed mattresses of less than ˝ of 1%.

Vinyl Products supplies water mattresses to distributors that need replacements for old softsides, industries that need to contain water in either a bag or open container system. We have made water bags for theater speaker systems, liners for hazmat materials, veterinary hospital beds and water beds for art installations. Do not assume that a water cushion system cannot be made without speaking with us first.

Vinyl Air Chambers As Well

Vinyl Products has been making vinyl air chambers since 1985, as a supplier for other companies before marketing our own adjustable air beds. We still make vinyl air chambers for several companies that manufacture their own line of air beds. As with waterbed mattresses, we can offer whatever size you need, and make everything to your specifications. Lead times are 6 working days.

Vinyl Products also supplies clear vinyl boot covers and belly bands that can be printed with your logo, to protect your mattresses in your show room.

Vinyl Products has always been an OEM supplier as well as marketing our own product lines. We offer longevity, proven designs, low return rates and fast production of 100% US Made Products.

Manufacturers interested in exploring vinyl applications for waterbeds, airbeds and other vinyl containment application should contact Kim Brown at : Vpforeign@aol.com 775-882-4472.
