To Englander "Eco-friendly" is More Than a Marketing Buzz-word or Current Trend

By: Dale T. Read, Editor-in-chief

It seems every time one picks up a home furnishings or mattress/bedding trade magazine there is an article about a company marketing natural, "green," sustainable or all natural sleep products. This is a good thing. The entire green movement is laudable with suppliers and manufacturers exploring ways to reduce the use of synthetic, petroleum based product as well as offer hypoallergenic and health supporting sleep systems. Specialty sleep and certain historical back-to-nature companies have been marketing these types of products for some years; however in recent years many of the conventional mattress companies have discovered this growing market niche and are moving in the ecological-friendly product direction. There is one long-established top-twelve brand mattress company that has been focused on natural products and hiking along the "Eco-Friendly" path for a long time. That company is ENGLANDER.

For many retail stores that require individualized attention and service, proper sales training, incentives, margins and commitment, ENGLANDER is the perfect mattress manufacturer to offer an "Eco-Friendly" product. Mark Savel, who serves as the chairman of the national brand marketing committee says that ENGLANDER is the "right fit," the perfect brand for home furnishings and furniture retailers, as well as certain sleep shops seeking to introduce and manage an environmentally responsible mattress program. Reminding BEDROOM Magazine that the seven former regional licensees actually own the national brand company ENGLANDER, LLC, Savel points out, "Englander is a national brand with ownership involvement at every level." As such ENGLANDER has bedding/mattress experienced ownership involvement at the level closest to local retail accounts, at each factory and at the national branding level as well. Savel notes that ENGLANDER offers their customers a flexibility and nimbleness that larger, nationally marketed brands may not be able to offer home furnishing retailers and sleep shops. "We are driven by our passion to provide our retail customers with the right individualized mix of product, marketing support, service and delivery that assures good business, great margins and solid profits for the retailer," says Savel.

ENGLANDER is not owned and managed by bankers or investors. "We are hands-on mattress/bedding people," says Savel. "At Englander we have spent decades mastering the art and science of sleep. Our environmentally-friendly products, such as our Nature’s Finest® Latex Sleep System, are made so comfortably that our dealers’ customers will really feel the difference the moment they lie down on them in the store. Throw in the fact that we offer excellent materials, engineering and fashion design at a really competitive price, and customers will realize the performance and the value immediately," says Savel.

ENGLANDER has been developing ecological-friendly mattresses for the last decade. In fact they introduced their old "Laytex" program long before most companies ever even considered making and marketing latex mattresses in the US. ENGLANDER developed a strong relationship with a Sri-Lankan based, all natural rubber supplier whose rubber was imported into the US from a plantation with over 5.5 million rubber trees. "Our natural rubber latex cores are made from the sap of rubber trees. This is nothing new for ENGLANDER. We have the experience and know-how of how to create "eco-friendly" products. We’ve been doing this for years, says Savel.

When asked to highlight the ENGLANDER "eco-friendly" program, Savel ticks off a list of key points. "We are committed to reduced energy consumption and recycling in our plants. Remember our ownership is present at each plant. This is our business, and we run it as efficiently as possible." Savel continues, "Wherever possible we have significantly reduced the amounts of petroleum-based materials. This makes sense not only due to the increased cost of petroleum materials, but it also causes us to explore environmentally renewable or sustainable materials, and technologies that have a less detrimental impact on the globe. As we indicated before, but it deserves repeating, our latex cores are all natural rubber from the sap of rubber trees. We are using organic cotton and natural bamboo fiber mattress covers as part of our Eco-friendly line. We also turned to soy-based renewable materials in portions of our foam cushioning layers in our Eco-friendly beds," states Savel.

"We truly are the right source to help retailers create, manage and market an ecologically-friendly bedding line. We have years of experience designing and selling these types of products. ENGLANDER is a nationally branded mattress line, owned, managed and operated by bedding executives who work directly with our retail customers. Perhaps most important of all we have never lost sight of comfort, performance, value and quality for the consumer. Our logo motto says it all, "Better Sleep, By Design".
