National Bedding Company Acquires St. Louis Serta Licensee

National Bedding Company (NBC) has acquired Serta Mattress Company—St. Louis, a division of Royal Bedding Co. Composed of 22 manufacturing facilities, including the new acquisition, NBC is the largest licensee of Serta, Inc. There are eight other independently owned licensees that manufacture Serta beds in the U.S. and Canada, and international partners that distribute Serta products in 60 countries worldwide. With this acquisition, NBC gains a 90,000 square-foot facility in St. Louis and a 50,000 square-foot assembly plant in Kansas City, Missouri.

"We anticipate an easy transition," notes Serta President, Bob Sherman. "Due to our long term relationship, this facility is in sync with our business processes and systems. Our customers in the St. Louis market will receive uninterrupted service."

Royal Bedding Company’s relationship with Serta dates back to 1926. The business was bought in 1958 by Alva Moog, the most recent owner, when he was 28 years old. Throughout his 48-year association with Serta, Moog has been an important player. He was a member of the Serta, Inc. board of directors for more than 30 years. In the mid-1980’s, he purchased the original Serta factory in Chicago. Moog closed the Chicago plant in 1987 and built the first Serta factory in Beloit. He later sold it to the founders of National Bedding Co.

"Alva is a great businessman, who always ran a profit-driven business and knew the power of effective marketing," said Sherman. "We wish him the best as he heads into retirement."
