What's On The Bed

Louisville Bedding

A "Top of Bed" Innovator

What does it take to be an industry leader? Innovation is a great place to start. And the 2006 Home Textiles Today Business Annual recognized that quality in Louisville Bedding. The 115 year old manufacturer has been a leading innovator since 1889, when Samuel D. Cruse found the company, then known as Louisville Pillow and Mattress, in Louisville, Kentucky.

For over a century, Louisville Bedding has not only kept pace with consumers’ needs, but has worked closely with mattress manufacturers to provide top of bed quality that works, fits and provides a luxurious feel.

For example, as pillowtop mattresses became more popular, Louisville Bedding engineered a product that would complement the high-end mattress, rather than overwhelm it. The company introduced a lower fill mattress pad that was high quality, with a high thread count, but low loft, so as not to increase the depth nor detract from the luxury mattress.

And, of course, the oversized mattresses required an innovation that would accommodate their size. Louisville Bedding came up with the patented Expand-a-Grip® that would fit the deeper mattresses and, more importantly, fit securely.

When knit-top mattresses first came out, Louisville Bedding was right in step, manufacturing and marketing a knitted mattress pad that maintained the quality and feel of the new knit top mattresses. As Scott Walters, National Merchandise Manager, explains, “It only makes sense….if you purchase a mattress because of the feel, why put something on top that will alter that feel? Instead, we developed something that further enhances the comfort!”

So, it is easy to see how the largest mattress pad manufacturer has remained current by being an innovator in the top-of-bed industry. But, Louisville Bedding was not content to confine their quality and innovation to their mattress pads.

Louisville Bedding’s extensive line of pillows re-entered the market in the mid-90’s. The company introduced a pocketed coil pillow line that correlated with the Simmons mattress pocketed coil system. The coil pillows, originally only in “firm”, has now been expanded to include a range of comfort levels, one just right for all types of sleepers, whether they be side, back or stomach sleepers.

Louisville Bedding’s pillows also boast a range of proprietary fiber blends, each creating a unique feel and a specific quality suited to the type of sleeping position. For example, the “Bounce” fiber offers a highly resilient fiberfill that stays plumper, loftier, longer. “Micro-down” has the distinctive feel of feather and down. According to the manufacturer, Micro-down comes closest to the natural fiber of any synthetic on the market.

In an industry of newcomers and dropouts, Louisville Bedding has honed its skills and products to stay ahead of the pack, through innovation. Yet, they remain true to their heritage and traditions through quality.
