Build your dreams with Verlo Mattress Factory Stores

Verlo Mattress Factory Stores offers the only franchise opportunity in the $7.7 billion-a-year sleep specialty industry. With its low entry cost and small labor requirements, Verlo carves a unique niche in the franchise marketplace.

Verlo Mattress Factory Stores has harbored this longstanding distinctive and solid reputation in the mattress industry from the day of its origin. Founded in 1958 by two school chums seeking to build a better mattress company and offer a superior product to their customers, Verlo’s handcrafted products anchor the specialty sleep lifestyle market, never faltering on quality.

The franchised Verlo organization is based in Whitewater, Wis. and takes full advantage of its Midwest roots in ethical conduct and honest transactions, both with its franchisees and its customers. A revolutionary business model sustains the retail framework for custom-built mattresses, ornamental design beds, futon mattresses, assorted futon covers, futon frames, bolsters and pillows. They also have offerings in exquisite 700-thread-count sheet sets, latex and synthetic down pillows and pads.

“The booming sleep products industry is a great place for franchising,” said Dave R. Young, Verlo’s reigning president for the past decade. “We are a specialized model in our industry segment, a segment worth nearly $8 billion dollars in 2006. Our consumer benefits resonate immediately with the mattress-buying consumer. We offer a strong brand and a powerful consumer value proposition that cannot be replicated within our industry. As a franchisor in the retail mattress marketplace, we keep our focus on moving at the speed of retail.”

A Verlo franchisee has three different business models to choose from—the most active at present is the classic model. An extremely efficient model for small- to mid-sized markets, the classic model incorporates the assembly operations within the footprint of the retail showroom. The typical footprint for this model runs between 6,000 and 10,000 square feet and employs six to 10 employees (including delivery staff). The franchisee is then able to leverage additional showroom-only presentations within the trade area for maximum saturation and market share domination. Showroom-only facilities typically run a footprint of 2,500 to 3,500 square feet and operate with just one or two full-time dedicated sales associates. Other operating models include the “central factory” and “metro” models, both designed for large to Top Ten market entrances.

As a bedding manufacturer who truly controls the distribution channel and understands the retail bedding consumer, a Verlo franchise owner is able to exploit its made-to-order value proposition. Verlo brings consumers the ability to customize their mattresses—a consumer benefit only Verlo can offer.

“We combine the value of our Craftsman-Direct® message with a consumer-education focus. The end result is a better-informed customer, buying better bedding, every time,” said Young.

Young noted that as a franchisor with a vertically integrated supply chain, the franchisees are able to access the world’s finest quality-construction components, build mattresses one at a time to order, and use the power of GMROI (gross-margin return on inventory) to impact their operation’s profitability.

“We add to that the support of the most sophisticated online enterprise portal that offers continuing education, industry information and direct communications between franchisor, franchisee and sales staff,” Young said.

“Our proprietary point-of-sale system is incorporated into our portal to drive the most accurate live information about each store. This information is live and accessible to a franchise owner anywhere, anytime. We literally track performance from the number of door pulls, close rate, average ticket, benchmark goals, and of course, product mix. The technology here is amazing and remains a backbone to our success and focus as we continue to grow across the nation.”
