Sealy Leadership and
Innovation in Flame Resistant Technology
Over
the last several years, Sealy has demonstrated its
commitment to flame resistance (FR). The company’s
dedicated R&D test center has been the proving ground
for FR development, testing, certification and quality
control. Since the facility’s opening in December 2004,
Sealy has burn-tested over 1,500 mattresses at the test
center.
The launch of Sealy’s Posturepedic and Stearns & Foster
brands with FlameGuard® underscores the company’s
continued commitment to FR and consumer safety. The
proactive move reflects Sealy’s goal to invest in the
development, testing and commercialization of FR
solutions that will meet or exceed federal, state and
industry standards.
Mike Murray, Vice President and legal counsel for Sealy,
spoke of the years of dedication, the investment in
product and testing and the participation in the
development of regulations at the federal and state
levels. He talked about the textile manufacturers and
suppliers who came to Sealy with a variety of FR
solutions. But, the history of flame resistant
technology and the years of research and development all
paled in the face of the 10 minute burn demonstration to
members of the press. In the test center, a mattress was
subjected to open flames, which initially caught; it
then extinguished itself within ten minutes. The area
where the flames were applied was scorched but, for the
most part, the mattress was ninety percent untouched. An
impressive sight.
While Sealy is ahead of the 2007 federal compliance date
and also complies with California’s TB-603, from the
consumer’s perspective, they have done more than meet
legal compliance. They have begun to save lives right
now.
