Englander: Over a Century of Sleep Technology Serving the Needs of Mattress Retailers and their Customers

When you do something for a long time, especially when you have the experience, reputation and the track record Englander has earned for over a century, you get very, very good at what you are doing. Some of Englander’s competitors in the sleep technology or specialty sleep field with perhaps several decades under their belt like to present themselves as pioneers or the established and experienced sources for technology-driven sleep solutions. However when you look at the history, their claims often pale compared to Englander’s rightful claim and marketing position that this privately-owned, national brand is indeed, “The Leader in Advanced Technology”.

Mark Savel, EVP of Sales and Marketing for World Sleep Products (one of the seven Englander licensee/owners) and chairman of the Englander Marketing Committee told BEDROOM Magazine at the Las Vegas market, “ Since 1894 Englander has always been at the forefront of new technologies.” Latex mattresses are a key example. Rolling the clock back Savel notes that following World War II, and prior to the marketing/product advancement of latex in the mid-to-latter 1990’s, Englander stood out as the leading provider of latex beds in the US.

There was no U.S. source for latex in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Bucking the tide of firm surfaced traditional innerspring mattresses manufactured by nearly all the conventional innerspring companies in the U.S., Englander negotiated a direct supply of foam rubber from Asian sources and offered a range of all natural latex beds to their customers. “We were known for our latex products decades before the other U.S. mattress companies re-entered the foam rubber bedding field,” states Savel. “Leveraging off our experience and knowledge over the past 113 years, we have become a leader in latex bedding, offering mattresses made with pure, natural latex rubber, not synthetic blends. We are proud to say that we offer superb quality and real value. Our Nature’s Finest line is designed to meet the comfort a consumer is looking for at price points that are competitive and meaningful to the retailer and consumer alike.”

Englander’s technology leadership applies to the temperature sensitive visco-elastic bedding field as well. ‘We believe our Viscopedic beds offer a completed or finished solution for the consumer. Many specialty and traditional bedding companies have embraced visco as a component with a zipper cover. We at Englander have used our vast knowledge to use visco memory foam that is poured here in the U.S. We have it surfaced, modified into seven support zones and then finished off into a fine, completed “real” mattress product. There is no handling of components or mattress cores, no zipping covers on and off, no extra work for the consumer, and no laundering,” says Savel.

Savel notes that for innerspring customers, the Tension Ease Essential line encompasses all price points, all feels, and uses several different innerspring configurations to achieve certain feels and comfort levels. Savel also gives retailers a glimpse into the Company’s innerspring future noting that “Englander will be launching its new flagship line in Vegas at the July market. Englander has wanted to change our flagship name and focus for a while now, so we have been conducting research development for quite a while. We are excited about our upcoming line, and encourage retailers to stay tuned for our introduction at the July market.”

When asked what was the driving force behind Englander’s success at the Las Vegas market and the continued growth and activity in 2007, Savel pointed to two issues beyond being a leader in technology. “We at Englander are flexible, nimble, and highly responsive to our individual retail customers. We may not be a giant national brand like a Goliath, but then remember a young shepherd boy killed that giant and went on to become a king. Combined together, our seven businesses that make up Englander have hundreds of years of experience, and we launched a new vision and a new mission and pulled together to create a united front geared to serve our retailers and their customers. Remember,” says Savel, “we at Englander never lose sight of our retail stores as the brand: Englander becomes their brand rather they simply being a conduit for our national brand. Every program we develop is geared to the needs of the retail store rather than meeting the needs of a giant manufacturing machine.”

Retailers wanting to learn more about Englander are invited to the show space on the First Floor of the Furniture Plaza on South Main Street in High Point, NC.
