Forget the Springs vs. Foam Debate: Classic Sleep Says Hybrid Construction is the Future of Bedding

Manufacturer Mixes the Best of Foam, Latex and Coils to Provide Consumers With the Comfort They Seek

October 5, 2009 - For some time this editor has been saying that advanced technology and innovative products will retire the old conventional innersprings versus specialty sleep foams debate. It appears now that at least one specialty sleep manufacturer is finding success in moving beyond the old formula by creating and marketing hybrid beds. Classic Sleep Products has reported to BEDROOM Magazine that hybrid mattresses, which combine multiple sleep technologies, exceeded 70-percent of the company’s total sales in the first two quarters of 2009, a record for the company.

“The customer shopping for a mattress today is looking for comfort and support, and they are responding briskly to performance from a combination of technologies, not just one construction,” said Classic Sleep Products CEO Michael Zippelli.

Zippelli said that the major retailers carrying his bedding products are experiencing a surge in sales of hybrid products that combine visco-memory foam and latex. Additionally Zipelli introduced encased coil units into some of his mattresses at the Fall Las Vegas Furniture Market this past September. The new bedding series introduced as pure elegance. These beds are composed of a 3-D fiber layer atop the sleep surface that improves airflow and results in a cooler sleep surface, a visco-memory foam layer for comfort, a Dunlop latex layer below that, and then an encased coil unit for superior support. The pure elegance series range in price from $1,200 to $1,999 at retail for a queen mattress.

“The three technologies working together are like winning the trifecta in bedding”

“The three technologies working together are like winning the trifecta in bedding,” said Zipelli. The layer of 3-D fiber plays major role in airflow and heat dissipation. A visco layer just below the 3-D fiber provides incredible comfort, and a layer of latex just below provides additional comfort and cooling. Finally, an encased coil delivers uncompromised conformability and support,” he said.

Classic began adding hybrids into its line-up two years ago, after listening to consumers who were concerned with the “sinking” feel and reflect heat from visco products, and the bounciness of latex.

“It was at that point we started experimenting with hybrids and the response, particularly at more moderate price points, has been tremendous. What has surprised us is the dominance of hybrid products as opposed to single-technology mattresses,” he said. “We decided to add an encased coil for this market because we were able to incorporate the technology properly into the product.”

Classic sells its bedding products under the Dormia brand, constructed with the finest components from around the world including all-natural and high-performance covers, lamb’s wool, visco-elastic memory foam, Talalay latex and a unique, multi-zone latex core.

The company offers enhanced features such as a quilted mattress tops and deluxe combination models that are comprised of memory and latex foam, as well as adjustable beds that allows each person to maximize their own sleep comfort. All premium bedding products are manufactured in the U.S. using hand-made craftsmanship and custom embroidery. The products are the highest-quality sleep products available in the market today.

Classic’s line of visco-elastic memory foam and latex mattresses, with various luxurious constructions, represents the fastest growing segment of the bedding market. The mattresses are designed to help customers get the maximum benefit out of each and every night’s sleep.
