1-800-MATTRESS Gives Two Senior Executives

Expanded Management Responsibilities

1-800-Mattress, the nation’s leading tele-retailer of mattresses and bedding accessories, said today that William Johnson has been promoted to executive vice president and general manager and adds the information technology department to his portfolio of responsibilities that include finance, legal and operations, and that Joe Vicens, who has been with the company for more than 25 years, and currently serves as executive vice president/chief operating officer of national sales, takes on added responsibility for oversight of call center operations.

Johnson and Vicens report directly to Founder and Chief Executive Officer Napoleon Barragan, along with John O’Connell, who was recently promoted to senior vice president of merchandising and retail sales and Vice President of Human Resources Kathy Desmond. Barragan retains direct responsibility for strategic planning and the marketing/advertising department.

The promotion of Johnson and the realignment of responsibilities come in the wake of last month’s tragic death of Luis Barragan, the company’s president and chief operating officer, who oversaw the call center and information technology departments, among others.

“Our ability to absorb these changes from within is a positive reflection of our management team and specifically the contributions these senior executives have made in making 1-800-Mattress the leading mattress and bedding accessories brand in the world. By realigning some reporting responsibilities, we are taking the necessary steps to assure the continued growth and expansion of our business for many years to come” said Barragan.

Johnson, a certified public accountant, joined 1-800-Mattress as vice president and chief financial officer in 2002 after 26 years of senior financial experience with leading consumer products brands and retailers such as Toymax International, Noodle Kidoodle and Associated Dry Goods. Earlier in his career, he was a consultant with Deloitte & Touche. He has added responsibilities each year culminating in the latest promotion.

Vicens was one of the first employees of 1-800-Mattress, starting as a telephone sales bedding consultant, and subsequently holding a series of senior positions as supervisor of the call center, the head of marketing and leader of the company’s franchise program.

Founded in 1976, 1-800-Mattress is the nation’s leading bedding tele-retailer. It enables consumers to purchase a vast array of mattresses, box springs and bedding accessories by phone and the Internet 24/7, or through its 104 retail locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland and California. It features products by Sealy, Serta, Simmons, King Koil, Nation’s Pride, Hypnos and Tempur-Pedic in 69 styles, including odd sizes, futons and electric beds.
