Carolina Mattress Guild Offers
Creativity, Innovation and Real Value to Bedding Retailers

Many of the
second or third tier and regional mattress and foundation
manufacturers are simply fun, adventuresome and exciting to learn
about. Retailers looking to add to or enhance their product line,
and who are looking for attentive, responsive service, a close
working relationship and even unique or different products have
turned to smaller manufacturers over the years to complete their
stores’ bedding line up.
Carolina Mattress Guild (CMG) located in Thomasville, NC not far
from downtown High Point serves as a prime example of an innovative
and growing local or regional company. Co-owner Kathryn Grigg says
that over the years CMG has really grown to understand the company’s
niche, the unique ground they stand on differentiating CMG from
larger national brands and even from other smaller mattress
companies.
Design is one area where the company definitely stands out. “We are
not limited by conventional thinking or trends,” says Grigg. “Color,
when used creatively attracts the consumer’s eye.” Grigg is quick to
remind retailers that the vast majority of mattress customers are
women. “Women, who make the majority of purchasing decisions are
attracted to color and texture. As a female designer, I design our
mattresses from a woman’s perspective. Grigg notes that many
manufacturers are still using their sales manager or product
managers (typically males) to choose ticking and make up the look
and feel of a bedding line. Grigg also points out that in addition
to colorized and higher fashion tickings, the company offers
exceptional overall tailoring that can see seen in the beds on the
showroom floor.
Grigg says that as a designer she looks at the entire lifestyle
package of a sleep set from ticking to labels to the name of the
product. “Our beds are designed to look good on the retail showroom
floor,” says Grigg. “You will not find functional , medical or
scientific names likes ‘Pedic’ or ‘Ortho’ in our product line.
Instead you will find names such as ‘Romantic Embrace’ and
‘Harmony’.”
Carolina Mattress Guild also stands out as a private label
manufacturer. “Our creativity and innovative approach have given us
the opportunity for many private label projects,” states Grigg. Some
of these include: Storehouse, Sofa Express & More, Dick Idol, and
World Vineyard.
Grigg is also proud of the company’s groundbreaking innovation in FR
compliance technology. “We were the first mattress manufacturer in
the US to positively react to the proposed FR law (which becomes a
nationwide standard in July 2007),” says Grigg. “We introduced our
first line of the “Safe Dreams’ bedding in April of 2003.”
In addition to style and creativity, Grigg emphasizes the company’s
commitment to engineering and the latest technology in sleep. Last
month at the Tupelo market, Carolina Mattress Guild showed 7 new
styles of bedding using latex foam, and the company is importing
several brands of health enhancing, higher performance and fashion
pillows.
*Editor’s note: Kathy Grigg may very well be the only female
owner of a mattress company in the US and she is among a handful of
women executives who hold top executives positions at the helm of a
mattress company.
